For people living in Ireland, a report published recently by Nursing Homes Ireland showed that nursing home care in the Emerald Isle can cost as much as 1,300 Euros per week or over 69,000 euros a year. The study showed that the average nursing home stay in Ireland is about 4 years.
About half of the nursing home bills in Ireland were funded through the Health Service Executive’s nursing home subvention program that offers financial assistance to those who need care. The system is similar to the Medicaid program offered in the United States and has been plagued with problems and complaints that the system is complex, difficult to understand and unfair. While reforms of the system are set to replace the older, more complex system it may not provide much relief or assistance to lowering the cost of nursing homes in Ireland.
