A HumanGood community, a community that recently changed hands and a community with hospitality “DNA” have taken the top three spots in a new list ranking the top 250 continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) in the U.S.
The “America’s Best Continuing Care Retirement Communities” list, publicized Wednesday, is yet another effort from a national organization to quality and rank senior living communities for consumers.
Research firm Statista worked with Newsweek to score the communities, which were primarily ranked in order of their “reputation scores” from either medical professionals or residents or their acquaintances.
According to the list, the goal of the rankings is to “help make informed decisions.” This is the first time Newsweek has highlighted CCRCs in its annual rankings, which include sections for health, work, products and services, finance and education.
Researchers examined more than 2,000 CCRCs across the country, with reputation score survey results gathered between August and September.
The top five CCRCs were:
- HumanGood – Valle Verde in Santa Barbara, California
- Edgemere in Dallas, Texas
- Willow Valley Communities in Willow Street, Pennsylvania
- Friendship Village of Bloomington in Bloomington, Minnesota
- River’s Edge in Riverdale, New York.
Each of the top five CCRCs were ranked as the top of their respective states as well.
John Falldine, executive director of Edgemere, told Senior Housing News that the award is recognition of the community’s ability to serve residents and workers alike.

The ranking from Newsweek is just the latest in a series of new online rankings meant to inform consumers on senior living options. They include the J.D. Power Senior Living Satisfaction Survey, U.S. News and World Report and Fortune’s Best Workplaces in Aging Services.
