Disney Offers First Glimpse of 55+ Housing Plans for Upcoming Storyliving Concept

Entertainment behemoth The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) has for the first time given a detailed look into its planned Storyliving by Disney concept and its significant d 55+ housing component.

Disney first announced plans for a master-planned community with a range of multi-family and active adult neighborhoods in 2022. The first community, known as Cotino, is planned for Rancho Mirage, California, with unit sales occurring this year, according to an update posted online by Disney this week.

Later last year, Disney released conceptual renderings, but the latest swath of details gave more insight into the unit mix and amenities planned for the Storyliving by Disney communities. The overall plans call for more than 300 homes and are set to include a variety of amenities and landscaping features for residents and visitors to enjoy. Project partners include Scottsdale, Arizona-based DMB Development and architectural design firm WHA along with Walt Disney Imagineering, which provided creative insight.

Included in the plans are Longtable Park Residences, a 55+ housing neighborhood that will offer two home collections varying in size from 50 feet to 70 feet wide and featuring “inviting curb appeal” and a “selection of interior finishes” to personalize each residence, according to the Storyliving by Disney website. The neighborhood is slated to be included in the first phase of Storyliving’s development process.

For the name Longtable Park Residences, the project’s designers drew inspiration from Walt Disney’s practice of sharing breakfast with friends at a long communal table during visits to California’s Coachella Valley. The centerpiece and namesake of the neighborhood is Longtable Park, an open area with space for grilling and mingling with friends that will include a large communal table for gatherings.

Longtable Park residents will have access to other amenities in the surrounding Cotino development, including parks designed with help from Disney Imagineers, an equestrian-themed dog park, walking paths and a nearby bay of water made crystal clear using Crystal Lagoons’ technology.

The community will also include a group called the Artisan Club, a membership-based slate of activities and services that include curated events from Disney, health and wellness programming, outings, opportunities for volunteering and a beachfront clubhouse with private beach access. The park will also be home to bocce ball courts.

Additional unit details, including floorplans, home designs and pricing are “anticipated to begin later this year prior to the launch of home sales,” the announcement said.

By developing Storyliving and its 55+ senior housing component, Disney and its partners are helping to blaze a trail along with other companies including Minto Communities and its Latitude Margaritaville brand. Such communities typically offer for-sale residences and unique and fun amenities geared toward older adults in search of a new chapter in life. And in general, the senior living industry is seeing a boom in low-acuity active adult rental communities for a similar crowd.
