[Updated] Brightview Senior Living, Vi Lead 2022 Best Workplaces in Aging Services List

Fortune Magazine’s annual Best Workplaces in Aging Services list is once again populated by some familiar faces.

Baltimore-based Brightview Senior Living took the No. 1 spot on this year’s list, while Chicago-based Vi was third on the list. Long-term care provider Citadel Healthcare was this year’s runner-up.

The annual list ranks the top aging services workplaces among 25 large senior housing and care providers and 25 small- and medium-sized senior housing and care providers.

Other senior living operators that landed a top-10 spot on the large providers list this year included Trilogy Health Services, WesleyLife, Silverado, Legend Senior Living Americare Senior Living, Sunrise Senior Living and Carlton Senior Living

This is Brightview’s fourth consecutive year at the top of the list. As of April, the company had 48 communities.

“We have always believed we must first be a Great Place to Work if we are also going to be a ‘great place to live,’ but what that looked like changed and evolved over the course of the pandemic,” Duker said after the operator received the same accolade in 2021. “We are humbled that our associates felt valued and that they trusted us to do the right things for them and our residents.”

And Vi rose from the No. 9 spot in 2021 to the No. 3 spot this year.

“Vi is humbled and honored to be recognized on the list of 2022 Best Workplaces in Aging Services,” President & CEO Gary Smith said in a statement.

Vi named Smith CEO earlier this year following the announced retirement of former president Randy Richardson. The company is also charting a new course by returning to the rental senior living market with a forthcoming community in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Holiday by Atria — the operating company formerly known as Holiday Retirement — was No. 14 on this year’s list. The company has “an engaged group of employees who are excited to come to work every day,” according to Atria Senior Living Chief Human Resources Officer Karen Sheean.

“[That] creates an environment that attracts exceptional talent and builds a welcome, dynamic community for the older adults who call Holiday by Atria home,” she said in a statement shared with SHN. “The feedback of our employees is valuable, and this recognition lets us know we’re moving in the right direction.”

California-based analytics firm Great Place to Work analyzed survey responses for more than 140,000 employees who are in the senior living and home care industries to assemble the list. The list is published in Fortune and is assembled by Activated Insights, which is based out of the Great Place to Work corporate campus in San Francisco.

Survey participants responded to 60 statements using a five-point scale and answered two open-ended questions to describe the quality of their employee experience.

Companies with more than 1,000 employees are classified as large, while companies with fewer than that are classified as small/medium.
