Perkins Eastman, Hord Coplan Macht and Ryan Companies’ architectural and engineering division Ryan A+E are the top three companies on a new list of 80 senior living architecture firms.
Compiled by design and construction publication Building Design + Construction as part of its annual Giants 400 Report, the “Top 80 Senior Living Facility Architecture + AE Firms” ranks the companies based on revenue generated in 2021.
Perkins Eastman stood well above the rest of the firms listed in the top 10, with the New York-based firm reporting $43.30 million in 2021 revenue. In addition to senior living, Perkins Eastman also works with companies on projects relating to the residential, multifamily and commercial sectors.
The company has worked in the past with a sizable list of operators, including Maplewood Senior Living, Atria Senior Living and Aegis Living.
Southminster Terraces, a Perkins Eastman-designed community in Charlotte, North Carolina, was also recognized as a runner-up in the repositioning/renovation category of the 2021 Senior Housing News Architecture and Design Awards.
At this year’s BRAIN conference hosted by Senior Housing News, Perkins Eastman Senior Associate Max Winters outlined the future of memory care design.
In the list’s second spot was Hord Coplan Macht, which reported $14.53 million in 2021 revenue, followed by Ryan Companies US / Ryan A+E that reported $12.20 million in revenue last year.
Both companies are similarly involved in a long list of senior living projects, some of them award-winning.
Hord Coplan Macht’s Brightview West End community also took the top spot in the 2018 Senior Housing News Architecture & Design Awards Best Assisted Living category.
Architectural firm Stantec saw $8.58 million in 2021 revenue in fourth, while Moseley Architects reported $6.95 million in revenue for last year to round out the top five.

Nearly half of the companies on the list — 43 of the 80 architectural firms — reported revenue of $1 million or greater and every firm in the top 20 reported revenue of $2 million or more in 2021.
In 2022, the senior living industry saw designs that emphasized socialization, outdoor space and affordability, as highlighted by the recent Senior Housing News 5 Development Projects To Watch list.
