LifeSpire of Virginia Picks New CFO

LifeSpire of Virginia, a nonprofit that manages four continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) in Virginia, has selected Chris Markwith as its CFO.

Markwith is now responsible for directing LifeSpire’s financial operations for LifeSpire. He previously worked as the organization’s controller.

Markwith is succeeding Joe Kelley, the current CFO who is due to retire in October after 10 years with LifeSpire. Markwith is expected to transition into the the CFO role on June 1.

Ascension Living Announces Chief Nursing Officer

Ascension Living has named Debra Valkenberg as its chief nursing officer.

In her new role, Valkenberg will lead the organization’s strategy and operations while aligning it with Ascension’s national health system.

Valkenberg has nearly 20 years of nursing leadership experience, and most recently worked as Ascension Living’s senior director of clinical operations. Before that, she was a senior divisional director of clinical services for Brookdale Senior Living.

SantaFe Healthcare Names New CEO

SantaFe HealthCare, which operates three communities in Florida under the SantaFe Senior Living moniker, has announced that Larry Schreiber is its new president and CEO.

Schreiber previously worked both as president and CEO of Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and the CEO of Wisconsin Collaborative Insurance Company (WCIC), which are both Anthem companies.

Argentum Board Names Six New Directors

Six new directors joined the Argentum board of directors.

The newly elected directors are:

  • Chris Cummings, senior vice president of asset management for Ventas
  • Dan Guill, president and COO of Enlivant
  • Sarabeth Hanson, president and CEO of Harbor Retirement Associates
  • Joel Nelson, president and CEO of Life Care Services
  • Katie Potter, president and CEO of Five Star Senior Living
  • Charlie Trefzger, president and CEO of Affinity Living Group

The board also lost a few members in the process. Jack Callison, CEO of Enlivant; Ed Kenny, chairman of Life Care Services; Bruce Mackey, former CEO of Five Star Senior Living; and Robert Probst, executive vice president and CFO of Ventas all transition off the board this year. Additionally, Kai Hsiao, CEO of Eclipse Senior Living, took over the role of treasurer, a title formerly held by Mackey.

D.C. Military Community Appoints Wellness Director

Knollwood, a life plan community in Washington, D.C., for retired military officers and their families, has named Sarah Prowitt to the role of wellness director.

In her new role, Prowitt will manage social, cultural and physical needs while providing a holistic health and wellness experience for residents.

Before joining Knollwood, Prowitt guided students as an academic success coach at Texas A&M University.

Oakmont Community Names Executive Director

Ted Burgess is now the executive director of Oakmont of Camarillo, an has joined Oakmont Senior Living community set to open later this year in Camarillo, California.

Burgess, who will lead the community’s operations, first got his start in senior living volunteering as a choir director at a retirement community more than 35 years ago.

Forthcoming Greenbrier Community Welcomes Executive Director

Longleaf Liberty Park, a Greenbrier Senior Living community due to open later this year in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, has named Leslie Carter as its executive director.

Carter will be tasked with staffing the community and helping to develop and guide its culture. She has more than 20 years of experience in the industry.

When it opens, the community will have 95 units and amenities such as a sports lounge, outdoor patios, all-day dining venues, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an art studio, a theater and a library for fireside reading.

Tennessee Community Names Sales and Marketing Director

Maple Court, an Integral Senior Living (ISL) community near Knoxville, Tennessee, has named Madison Wright as director of sales and marketing.

In his new role, Wright will help develop relationships between the community and local businesses and organizations.

Wright previously spent three years as a senior vibrant life director and a sales and marketing assistant with another ISL community in Knoxville, Pointe at Lifespring.

HJ Sims Hires Vice President of Investment Banking

Investment bank and wealth management firm HJ Sims has hired Siamac Afshar to work as a vice president of investment banking.

HJ Sims plans to expand its derivative advisory and escrow bidding capabilities under Siamac’s leadership. Before coming aboard at Sims, Siamac worked for 12 years as a vice president with Acacia Financial Group, an independent municipal advisory firm.

Draper and Kramer Hires FHA/HUD Lending Senior Vice President

National real estate firm Draper and Kramer has hired Jacob Vial as a senior vice president for its commercial finance group, which oversees Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) lending for multifamily and senior housing properties.

In his new role, Vial will work as a chief underwriter for all credit decisions and direct strategic financing initiatives.

He is rejoining Draper and Kramer’s commercial finance group, where he held the title of vice president from 2008 to 2014. Previously, Vial worked at PGIM Real Estate Finance, where he was a director and FHA deputy chief underwriter for senior housing and healthcare loans.
