SmartStop Names Senior Vice President of Finance

SmartStop Asset Management, a public, non-traded real estate investment trust (REIT) specializing in self-storage, student and senior housing, recently promoted James Barry to the role of senior vice president of finance.

In this capacity, Barry is responsible for managing budgets, forecasts and financial analyses for SmartStop.

Previously, Barry served in various financial-related roles for SmartStop, including vice president of financial planning and analysis, director of finance and financial analyst.

Commonwealth Senior Living Welcomes Executive Director in Virginia

Commonwealth Senior Living has named Suzanne Cloyd as executive director of its senior living community in Abingdon, Virginia.

Cloyd has more than 30 years of experience in senior living and human resources, most recently working as an assisted living provider in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Commonwealth Senior Living operates 21 independent living, assisted living, and memory care communities throughout the state of Virginia.

Illinois Life Plan Community Gets New Executive Director

Sedgebrook, a life plan community managed by Life Care Services in Lincolnshire, Illinois, has welcomed Dan Harrington as its new executive director.

Harrington, who spent the last 17 years in the senior living industry, has worked in various management roles throughout his career. Most recently, he worked as district director of operations and oversaw nine senior housing communities in the Chicago metro area.

AgeWell Appoints Leader for Georgia Property

AgeWell Living recently announced that Dan Bohler is the new executive director of Celebration Village Forsyth, a 325-home senior living community in Suwanee, Georgia.

Bohler is now tasked with managing the community’s growth and day-to-day operations. Most recently, he worked as executive director of Discovery Village at Sugarloaf, where he managed and oversaw the entire community.

AgeWell Living operates seven other senior living communities, and has four more under development.

Community in British Columbia Names General Manager

Opal, an Element Lifestyle Retirement community in British Columbia, Canada, has a new general manager.

Edwin Brunink recently joined the community as general manager. Brunink, who holds 20 years of business management experience, previously worked with Holland America Line, Oceania Cruises, Revera, Compass Group Canada and within the retirement division of Jarlette Health Services.

In his new role, he will help implement Element’s “intergenerational vision,” the company announced.

Erickson Living CCRC Names Director of Sales

Windsor Run, an Erickson Living continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Matthews, North Carolina, named Ryan Barkley as director of sales.

Barkley has more than 12 years of sales experience, and most recently worked for Riderwood, a sister Erickson Living community located in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Windsor Run, which opened earlier this year in the spring, is one of 19 CCRCs managed by Erickson Living.

Washington Life Plan Community Promotes Executive Chef

Timber Ridge, a life plan community in Issaquah, Washington, has promoted Raul Jimenez to the role of executive chef.

Jimenez, who was previously the community’s lead cook, is now tasked with overseeing the community’s kitchen and restaurant operations, including menu planning for multiple dining venues. Jimenez first joined Timber Ridge in 2010 as a dinner cook.

Life Care Services and Westminster Funds are the joint-venture partners of Timber Ridge.

Washington Life Plan Community Names Marketing and Sales Director

Emerald Heights, a type A life plan community in Redmond, Washington, recently appointed Jacqueline Claessens to the role of marketing and sales director.

In her new role, Claessens will manage day-to-day marketing, public relations and sales programming for the community.

Before joining Emerald Heights, she served as marketing director and community relations officer for Horizon House, a not-for-profit life plan community in Seattle.

Remedi SeniorCare Appoints Senior Vice President of Human Resources

Long-term care and senior living pharmacy Remedi SeniorCare has named Erin Ascher as its new senior vice president of human resources.

In her new role, Ascher is tasked with will leading all aspects of the company’s HR, including recruitment, compensation and benefits, organizational development, performance management, HR compliance and employee relations and engagement.

Previously, she worked as chief human resources officer of Gentherm, Inc., a thermal technology firm operating in 13 countries.

Laxton Named to Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Board of Examiners 

The U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has added to its quality award board of examiners Christopher Laxton, executive director of AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine.

In his new capacity, Laxton will be responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications submitted for the Baldrige Award, an annual honor bestowed to innovative organizations in six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, education, health care, and nonprofit.

The examiner board is composed of more than 300 leaders from industry, professional, trade, education, health care, and nonprofit  organizations in the U.S.
