This year, the rankings among the top 10 largest senior living providers remain unchanged—despite the fact that the single biggest player shed a significant amount of resident capacity.
Brentwood, Tennessee-based Brookdale Senior Living (NYSE: BKD) once again came out on top in terms of size, with a capacity for 101,965 residents across a total of 1,123 communities. The industry behemoth retained the top spot despite shedding almost 10% of its resident capacity in several property sales between 2015 and 2016, Argentum notes. The senior living provider association compiles a ranking of providers by size each year, and released the most recent edition in an email Thursday.
Brookdale also seized the distinction of being the largest memory care provider in the country, but it ceded the No. 1 position with regard to independent living. Lake Oswego, Oregon-based Holiday Retirement is the largest IL provider and is the second-largest senior living provider in the country, with a resident capacity of 37,645 across its 308 communities, according to Argentum.
Des Moines, Iowa-based Life Care Services, with a capacity for 28,220 residents across 140 communities, came in as the third-largest senior living provider in the country.
In fact, the only change from last year’s top 10 senior living providers is a slight one—Hickory, North Carolina-based Affinity Living Group appeared on the list under its former name of Meridian Senior Living last year. The company remains the 10th largest senior living provider in the country, with a capacity for 8,266 residents across 111 total communities.
Some senior living providers made significant gains this past year in terms of their resident capacity. Pathway Senior Living, for instance, jumped from the 64th largest senior living provider to the 55th this year. On the flip side, some providers fell in the ranks; Harbor Retirement, 63rd this year, was 46th last year, and Century Park dropped from 13th to 23rd.
This year, Argentum’s list of the largest senior living providers also expanded from 80 to 100 senior living providers. New additions to the list include Bridgestone Senior Living, which rang in as the 32nd largest provider, and Juniper Communities, the 79th largest provider in the country.
