New Sunrise CEO Shares Experience in Health Care, Working With Seniors

After announcing a new company CEO in late April, Sunrise Senior Living revealed some more detail on the new chief executive through a Q&A on its website this week.

Chief Executive Chris Winkle previously served as chief operating officer for Sunrise and has more than 30 years of experience in health care. Previously he served as CEO for MedQuest Inc. and as president and CEO of Mariner Health Care, Inc.

Winkle shared with Sunrise a look into his very first job, a health care job, working for the business office of a pediatric rehabilitation hospital. His experience working with the youngest of the population also shares some similarities in working with the senior population, he says.

“My entire career, I’ve really loved working with seniors and kids as they are very similar – they are both going to be brutally honest and say exactly what they want to say,” Winkle tells Sunrise. “It’s very refreshing,”

Further, the new CEO says he’s an avid historian, which also lends itself to his interest in hearing about stories and experiences of seniors.

“I’m constantly reminded that our seniors have walked paths I have never seen, and from their experiences they’ve gained a great deal of understanding and wisdom that I can benefit from,” Winkle says. “They remind you to be compassionate and always respect each other.”
