Bloomberg took a look at the future of skilled nursing and spoke with Zeke Turner, CEO of Mainstreet Property Group.
The company has been successful creating higher end skilled nursing communities that have a similar feel to hotels.
“We threw away the [traditional skilled nursing] designs and said, let’s start over and design something that is appealing to the consumer,” said Turner.
Mainstreet would like to take its model and expand to other states, but has found that only about half of the United States will allow it to develop.
“The nursing home lobby has been strong for many years, with 40 year old buildings they haven’t innovated in a long time and they enact state laws that restrict competition. ” he said.
