New Sunrise CEO Shares Firsthand Experience with Senior Care

Sunrise Senior Living’s new CEO Penny McIntyre may not be a senior living native, but in a recent interview published on the company’s blog, she shared her firsthand experience as a caregiver as well as goals for her leadership of the largest senior living

McIntyre, who joined the company as successor to former CEO Mark Ordan, has more than 20 years of global consumer experience including her recent role as president of Newell RubberMaid’s consumer group and former positions with Coca Cola and S.C. Johnson. She is relatively new, however to senior care, barring her firsthand experience.

“As I watched my father suffer through Alzheimer’s disease, I learned very quickly the impact quality care could make on families who were faced with the challenges that caregiving brings,” McIntyre said in the company blog post. “I saw up close and personal what family members go through to support their loved ones and recognized that there had to be a better option.”

Sunrise plans to continue as a leader in senior care in the coming year, McIntyre also shared, including a mantra she uses in management.

“My teams know that I have a saying – say, do, deliver and repeat – and I really believe that is the key to success,” she said. “You must know your goals, work to meet them with results, and then ensure consistency in the product. As a leader, I help my team work through this process while always keeping the customer first and foremost in our minds.”

Former CEO Ordan announced in November he would step down from his post, after maintaining the position following Health Care REIT’s (NYSE: HCN) landmark acquisition of Sunrise’s real estate holdings—a $4.3 billion deal that closed in 2013.
