Crain’s Detroit Business ran an article last week profiling discussions between Jewish Apartments & Services and Jewish Home and Aging Services about a possible merger of the two organizations. While the religious affiliations and locations maybe un-important, the fact that two housing non-profits are looking at merging represents the challenges that even non-profit housing organizations are facing in the tough economic times. Based upon the financial information provided in the article, it seems that both organizations are relatively small and merging the operations could ensure the survivability by working together as one entity by eliminating redundancies and overhead. Look for non-profit marriages to increase in 2009 but not inter-denominational ones.
