The Wall Street Journal this weekend had an article about using cooking classes, wine tastings and cooking demonstrations as a way to attract affluent seniors to their communities that not only can afford the cost of living in the community but can afford to eat dinner at the community’s restaurants and attend the cooking classes.
The article discusses the trends in socialization and the fact that some communities are looking to move past the golf club atmosphere. Besides the community aspects of cooking classes, many seniors are using it to learn to cook better for themselves as seniors at times suffer from malnutrition or lack of eating when living by themselves. It seems that instead of watching CNN all day long, many seniors are watching the Food Channel and looking to channel their inner Bobby Flay and Rachel Ray through their senior community cooking classes.
