One of the pleasures of traveling is reading local papers in the towns on my visits and saw something relevant while I was in Aspen, Colorado recently. After seeing some of the homes in the area listed in the multi-million dollar range and seeing that the qualifications of 60 years of age or older and with gross income from all sources of less than $25,525 for a single and $34,225 for a couple for property tax rebates/exclusions. I started to think about how many seniors in Pitkin County would really qualify for this. The perfect person or couple would be to take their retirement savings, buy a home in Aspen and effectively have most of their net worth in their home and become Ski Instructors with Aspen Ski Company. At $10 bucks an hour plus tips, they would definitely fit the income qualification factor….affordable senior housing in Pitkin County seems more like a pipe dream than a reality.
