The Leadership Series—Most Read in 2016

Senior Housing News and PointClickCare have teamed up over the past year to bring an in-depth look into what it takes to be an influential leader in the senior housing industry today.

The Leadership Series is a consortium of comprehensive interviews with industry-leading executives to bring unique insight into their personal stories. The series covers their day-to-day approaches to leadership as well as their visions for the future of their companies and the senior housing industry as a whole.

Over the course of 2016, Senior Housing News has brought you up close and personal with CEOs, presidents, chairmen and founders of 25 of the most prominent senior living organizations, and to close out the year we are highlighting the most read interviews of 2016. Here they are.

Andy Smith, Brookdale. Meet T. Andrew “Andy” Smith, President and CEO of Brookdale Senior Living, the nation’s largest senior living operator. Though he came into senior living from outside the industry, he has for the last 10 years held roles in Brookdale, being named CEO in 2013 and president earlier this year. We traveled to the Brentwood, Tennessee headquarters to learn about how he got his start in senior living, how exactly he manages a workforce 82,000 strong, and how he learned early on never to use the 8-letter “F-word” in senior housing.

Jack Callison, Enlivant. Introducing Jack Callison, CEO of Enlivant. Callison is no stranger to the industry: he brings two decades of multifamily and senior housing experience to Enlivant, including his most recent role as CEO of Holiday Retirement. We sat down with Callison in his Chicago office to hear about leading a company through ‘massive’ change and why it’s better to own a challenge rather than sweeping it under the rug.

Debra Cafaro, Ventas. Meet Debra Cafaro, Chairman & CEO of Ventas, Inc.  When Cafaro took the helm in 1999, the company looked quite different from the $25-billion-plus powerhouse you see today. We sat down with Debra in her Chicago offices to hear about what makes Ventas different, the best advice she ever received (it came from her parents) and why being too far ahead of the curve can be just as bad as being behind it.

Pat Mulloy, Elmcroft. Introducing Pat Mulloy, Chairman & CEO of Elmcroft Senior Living. After happening upon the senior living industry purely by accident, Mulloy took his roots in law and government service to lead several senior living organizations. Hear how he continues to dream big, why he’s doing away with the term “human resources,” and what he does when business (or life) throws him a curveball.

Learn how each innovator began, and the best advice they received along the way. Each interview delves into the struggles and successes each company has faced, and where they are headed for the future.

In addition to their personal stories, gain an understanding of the inner workings of the senior housing industry leaders and how they are bracing for changes to come, including attracting new talent to the industry, future leadership, and innovative technologies.
