The Top 10 Senior Living Providers Ranked by Capacity

On the heels of the announcement they will be merging in a deal slated to close in the third quarter of 2014, Brookdale Senior Living and Emeritus were ranked as the two largest senior living providers by capacity, respectively, by the Assisted Living Federation of America.

In its annual ranking of senior living providers by resident capacity, Brookdale took the No. 1 spot per ALFA’s list with capacity for more than 64,000 residents. The top 10 remained the same, though ranks shifted slightly over 2013, with two thirds of the top providers expanding capacity during the year, ALFA reports.

Emeritus was No. 2, with 50,282 resident capacity nationwide.

Together, Brookdale and Emeritus’s combined capacity comprises about 112,000 residents, making the company by far, the largest senior living provider in the nation.

Also making the list of Top 5 providers were Holiday Retirement with 42,263 in resident capacity, Life Care Services with 26,763 resident capacity and Sunrise Senior Living with 25,266 capacity.

Rounding out the Top 10 providers by size were Five Star Quality Care, Erickson Living Management, Atria Senior Living Group, Capital Senior Living Corp. and Senior Lifestyle Corp.

ALFA also compiled the largest memory care providers, largest assisted living providers and largest independent living providers by size in its rankings.

Memory care providers shifted in the ranks relative to 2013, with Emeritus, Brookdale, Sunrise, HCR ManorCare and Meridian Senior Living comprising the top five by resident capacity, respectively.

For assisted living and independent living providers, the top 5 providers remained the same year-over year, with providers shifting rankings slightly.
