Pelosi, Boehner Tap Senior Care & Health Experts for New National LTC Commission

A recently-formed Commission on Long-Term Care received three new leadership appointments last week by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, with fourth and fifth appointments announced in the last couple days by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.).

Bringing expertise from the fields of health care and senior care including Medicare, the new leaders bring a wealth of experience to the new commission.

“Solving the challenge of long-term care is essential to ensuring the health, well-being, and economic security of our nation’s seniors and Americans with disabilities, and each of these appointees will bring deep experience, extensive expertise, and bold ideas to the work of this commission,” Leader Pelosi said. “These three leaders will represent the interests, concerns, and voices of every family struggling to deal with issues of long-term care, and we look forward to working with them to develop a clear, comprehensive plan to tackle these challenges.”

Announced by Pelosi on the House floor, the new appointments include SCAN Foundation President Dr. Bruce Chernof, the Center for Medicare Advocacy’s Executive Director Judith Stein, and activist and philanthropist George Vradenburg.

The committee is tasked with implementing and financing a comprehensive set of long-term care services for seniors as well as people with disabilities. It was established under the American Tax Relief Act in early 2013.

Stephen Guillard, the chairman of long-term care trade group the Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care and retired COO of HCR ManorCare, was named to the commission by Boehner today.

Yesterday, Neil Pruitt, Jr., the chairman of nursing home trade group the American Health Care Association’s Board of Governors, was appointed to the commission by McConnell.

“Wide diversity and varying perspective are the required prerequisites to ensuring the Commission examines the right problems, and puts forward the right ideas to help address the monumental challenges facing America’s retirement system,” said Alan Rosenbloom, president of the Alliance, in a statement.
